Printable and flexible electronics represent a rapidly emerging market enabled primarily by advances in material technology. The core active material within the electronic device is the semiconductor layer which functions in the same way as traditional semiconductors but with one significant difference - they are solution processable either dissolved into a solution or ink.

Solution or Ink based electronic materials such as Smartkem's OSC’s thus enables the fabrication of devices onto flexible substrates using printing techniques such as ink-jet, gravuere, screen and roll to roll processes so eliminating the slow and costly semiconductor processes required by traditional semiconductor materials.

These unique properties offer a number of benefits over traditional electronic materials such as increased throughput, reduced production cost, lower weight due to application to an array of ultra-thin substrates, potential for large area production and improved robustness.

Smartkem formulates OSC inks to address the needs of these printing processes, tailoring the viscosity, surface energy, film thickness and surface morphology to meet production process requirements and ultimately deliver the desired device architecture and subsequent device performance.
