Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct all design and layout activities relating to OTFT devices, including display/sensor panels, circuits and test element groups (TEGs)
  • Conduct development of parameterizable cells (p-cells) for OTFT devices and develop semi-custom circuits for digital logic devices as part of the SmartKem EDA development activity
  • Work with engineering and scientific teams to help generate design of experiment (DoE) layouts to examine the critical design & process parameters affecting OTFT device uniformity and the knock-on effect upon circuit/backplane performance. These include device geometry, etching times, OSC formulation etc.
  • Liaise with e-test to help design efficient ways of extracting device performance information from the DoEs
  • Generate OTFT device models and conduct simulations of circuits to verify the robustness of the model to predict circuit behaviour. Modelling will be using a combination of pre-existing OTFT models but may need adapting according to the behaviour of SK’s OSC materials. Simulation will use a combination of free simulation tools and some commercial packages
  • Work with customers to understand their desired product performance parameters and how this influences the design of OTFT circuits to demonstrate the proof-of-concept devices (e.g. AMOLED backplane, FoD sensor, micro-LED backplane, RFID circuit etc)
  • Work with SK’s external partners to help specify and design electronic driving systems for displays, sensors etc

Knowledge and Skills required

  • Significant knowledge of the principles of display backplane design (including AMOLED sub-pixel design beyond 2T-1C architectures)
  • Knowledge of industrial drivers for display quality, performance and reliability and how to test these in devices
  • A good knowledge of TFT device fabrication processes using industrial fabrication methods (sputtering, lithography, wet/dry etching). Hands on experience is preferred but extensive experience is not expected.
  • Knowledge of TFT device physics and industrial applications of TFTs (a-Si, LTPS, oxide etc)
  • The jobholder must be able to demonstrate a good ability to use CAD tools (such as KLayout) to design TFT structures, develop DOE experiments, and design prototype products. Experience with the generation of parameterizable cell generation is desirable.
  • Must have ability to perform circuit simulation using recognised software (Silvaco, LTSpice etc)


  • Significant industrial experience as a designer of a range of circuits for display, sensor etc.
  • Has experience of working with leading display companies in Asia
  • Some experience of working in an R&D environment on new and developing technologies

  • BSc in a Physical Science, Electronic Engineering or Materials Science plus a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. electronic materials, devices etc).


  • The position is based at CPI in Sedgefield, but some flexibility in working arrangements is possible.
  • Occasional travel within the UK, EU and to Asia is likely to be required.
