Board of Directors

Ian Jenks

Ian has more than 30 years of Board-level experience in Industrial Technology, both as an investor and as Chief Executive Officer of companies operating in the US and Europe. He was formerly Chairman of Brady plc, the senior independent director of Paysafe plc, a partner in west coast venture capital firm Crescendo Ventures LLP, Chairman of Nasdaq listed Oplink Communications Inc and President of Uniphase Inc. Ian holds a BSc in aeronautical engineering.

Robert Bahns

Robert was previously CFO of WaveOptics, a technology start-up which is developing waveguides and projectors for use in AR glasses. Prior to that, Robert worked for 20 years in venture capital where he focussed on investments in the communications, hardware and materials sectors, first in a technology investment team at Nomura International and latterly for Touchstone Innovations (acquired by IP Group). Robert trained as an electronics engineer and worked in Japan for Pioneer Electronics Corporation early in his career, establishing the company’s first manufacturing facility in the UK. He has an MBA from Insead and a degree in electrical sciences from the University of Cambridge.

Simon King

Simon focuses on early stage deal flow, screening investment opportunities and performing preliminary due diligence at Octopus Ventures. Octopus Ventures is a London and New York based venture capital firm focused on identifying unusually talented entrepreneurs intent on building businesses that can scale explosively to create, transform or dominate an industry. Before joining Octopus, Simon was a research scientist investigating novel materials for photovoltaic applications at Imperial College London. Simon holds an MA and MSc in Physics and a Ph.D. in Molecular Electronics. He has an active interest in businesses focussing on EdTech, IoT and Machine Learning. Within the Octopus portfolio, Simon works closely with Surrey NanoSystems, Origami Energy, Trafi, WaveOptics and SmartKem.

Klaas de Boer

Klaas has about 20 years of venture capital experience, mainly in Europe, but also in North America and Israel. He is currently Managing Partner of Entrepreneurs Fund, which he joined in 2006. At Entrepreneurs Fund, Klaas’s responsibilities included inge GmbH (sold to BASF), Technolas Perfect Vision (sold to Bausch & Lomb), Prosonix Ltd (sold to Circassia), Lifeline Scientific Inc (sold to Genext), New Motion (sold to Shell) and Optinose (Nasdaq listing). In addition to SmartKem, he currently chairs Xeros Technologies Group and looks after General Fusion and Vasopharm. Klaas started his career with McKinsey & Company in Amsterdam. From there he joined Vanenburg Group where he led the investment in WebEx. Klaas has an MSc in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology, and an MBA from Insead.

Dr. Simon Ogier (Fellow of the Institute of Physics)

CTO

Simon is an internationally recognized expert in the field of organic thin film transistors. Since 2001, he has worked to develop high performance organic semiconductors for transistor applications within companies such as Avecia, Merck, CPI and more recently with NeuDrive Limited. From 2007 whilst at CPI, Simon had a major role in establishing the UK’s National Printable Electronics Centre (PETEC), housing a range of state-of-the-art fabrication equipment for pilot scale production of plastic electronic devices. The facility includes £35M of capital equipment capable of processing substrates up to 370 x 470mm in size. Simon has co-authored 26 journal articles in addition to being a co-inventor on 15 patent families, and serves as an active member of the IEC TC119 standards committee for Printed Electronics.

Hugh Baker-Smith

CCO

Hugh has more than 20 years experience of licensing and selling innovative products across Europe, China, Japan, Korea, and the United States. This is reflected in a consistent career track record of delivering revenue growth while serving in Executive Board positions for both public and private companies - and, more recently, in Non-Executive, Interim, and Advisory roles.Technologies that Hugh has commercialised include inkjet, printed electronics, intelligent power amplification, data compression, and Smart City networks. The applications that he has sold into cover mobile phones, consumer electronics, industrial/commercial printing, and public utilities. Hugh has recruited and managed sales and technical teams across EMEA, APAC, and North America, and has particular experience of licensing intellectual property into Japan and China.

Dr. Beverley Brown

Chief Scientist

Dr Brown is a senior technology and innovation leader with more than 20 years of technical and commercial experience in high technology start-up businesses within the Specialty Chemicals industry. Dr Brown has worked in the technology area of Printable Electronics since its inception almost 20 years ago. She is considered to be one of the world’s leading experts in the field of organic semiconductor technology and holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Glasgow. She spent eighteen years at ICI PLC in the 80s and 90s, was accountable for the successful divestment and technology transfer of NeoRaDTM to DSM, and set-up a world-class multi-disciplinary plastics electronics research team of 28 at Avecia, which was eventually acquired by Merck in 2005.

Sri Peruvemba

CMO

Sri was previously Chief Marketing Officer for E Ink Holdings, where he played a major role in transforming the start-up to a $1B+ global company. With over 30 years of experience in the technology industry, Sri has been an influential advocate in the advancement of electronic hardware technologies including sensors, electronic displays, haptics, touch screens, and related materials; and consults, writes, and presents on those subjects globally. Sri has also held senior level positions at Sharp Corp, Cambrios, TFS Inc., Planar Systems, and Novasentis. He also serves on the boards of Visionect and The Society for Information Display (SID) and has BSEE and MBA degrees and a post-graduate diploma in management.
