Presentation Overview

The talk will focus on organic semiconductors being designed into display applications, taking them to the next level of performance to enable flexible backplanes, mini/micro LED backlights for HDR and a variety of other applications. Dr. Brown will describe the chemistry behind the best performing OTFT products in the industry and Dr. Ogier will describe the benefits of the technology in interesting new applications.

Dr Beverley Brown

Chief Scientist

Dr Brown is a senior technology and innovation leader with more than 20 years of technical and commercial experience in high technology start-up businesses within the Specialty Chemicals industry. Dr Brown has worked in the technology area of Printable Electronics since its inception almost 20 years ago. She is considered to be one of the world's leading experts in the field of organic semiconductor technology and holds a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Glasgow. She spent eighteen years at ICI plc in the 80 and 90s, was accountable for the successful divestment and technology transfer of NeoRaDTM to DSM, set-up a world class multi-disciplinary plastics electronics research team of 28 at Avecia, which was eventually acquired by Merck in 2005.

Dr Simon Ogier

(Fellow of the Institute of Physics)


Simon is an internationally recognized expert in the field of organic thin film transistors. Since 2001 he has worked to develop high performance organic semiconductors for transistor applications within companies such as Avecia, Merck, CPI and more recently with NeuDrive Limited. From 2007 whilst at CPI Simon had a major role in establishing the UK's National Printable Electronics Centre (PETEC), housing a range of state-of-the-art fabrication equipment for pilot scale production of plastic electronic devices. The facility includes £35M of capital equipment capable of processing substrates up to 370 x 470mm in size. Simon has co-authored 26 journal articles in addition to being a co-inventor on 15 patent families, and serves as an active member of the IEC TC119 standards committee for Printed Electronics.

Dr. Sihui He

Dr. Sihui He is an active member in Bay Area SID volunteer team, helping to organize the monthly BASID seminar. She is also an active member in SID near-eye-display metrology committee, helping to make a better measurement standard. Dr. He has been working on augmented reality/mixed reality displays for 5+ years. In DigiLens, Sihui is in the R&D optics team, responsible for developing simulation tools and measurement tools, as well as design for prototypes. Previously, Sihui was in Microsoft HoloLens optics team, responsible for developing next generation optics. Her work on AR/MR waveguides leads to publication of patents on improving field of view, uniformity, and contrast. Dr. He received her Bachelor in Information Engineering from Zhejiang University in China. She received her Ph.D. in optics from University of Central Florida, under supervision of Prof. Shin-Tson Wu in CREOL and Prof. Jiyu Fang in Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Her graduate research focused on liquid crystal biosensors.
